12 March 2010 : Where's the snow? The skies over interior Alaska have failed to drop much snow this winter. In fact, Fairbanks is in the running for the 2nd least snowy winter on record. Don't be alarmed though...the 100-mile race course is still in great shape, especially the first 40 miles and last 20 miles, which have been groomed nicely by BLM. The 40-mile stretch between Cache Mtn cabin (Checkpont #2) and Borealis LeFevre cabin (Checkpoint #4) has quite a bit of overflow, glare ice, and bumps. Racers should be prepared to deal with very icy surfaces and/or patches of open water. This years race will definitely produce some entertaining "tales from the trail" even if the weather doesn't get stormy.
03 March 2010 : The GPS track of the race course and the waypoints for all the checkpoints and other cabins in the White Mountains Recreation Area are now available for download. The track and waypoints are available in GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) and should be compatible with most GPS units. The files can be found under the "Race Maps" link on the left-hand side bar of the webpage.
28 February 2010 : The 2010 Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) starts today. Racers will traverse 350 miles of the Iditarod sled dog trail to McGrath or complete the entire 1100 mile route to Nome, Alaska. The White Moutains 100 will be counted as a qualifier for the ITI. Pete Basinger, Jeff Oatley, and Rocky Reifenstuhl will be competing in the White Mountains 100 after completing the ITI. Follow their progress here: ITI Results.
02 February 2010 : The 2009-10 winter season snow drought continues in the interior. So far, this winter is falling into the top 10 lowest snowfalls for Fairbanks. BUT - the White Mountains trails are in bomber shape considering the dismal snowfall. The course is hardpacked and bumpy in places. Skiers and bikers have comfortably traversed the entire race course already this winter, so don't be discouraged. There are still almost 7 weeks until the race start and plenty of time for additional snowfall. There was an article in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner about the low snow this winter.
